The occasion's name comes from its finishing function: the representative burning of an enormous wooden model, alluded to as the Man, that happens on the penultimate evening, the Saturday night before Labor Day.

The 2023 Burning Man had downpours and resulting flooding on Labor Day weekend, with a lockdown forestalling vehicle development all through the site. Coordinators set up for some service and shared a 2023 Wet Playa Survival reference: "no driving is allowed until the playa surface evaporates, except for crisis administrations… Members are urged to preserve food, water, and fuel, and sanctuary in a warm, place of refuge"
